Unfinished Work

As I slowly inch closer to my big departure, the more and more I throw left-over scraps at this blog!

...

Oh, well!

Here's scraps from an unfinished LEGO Minifigure Racer design.

Did I mention the story is titled "Seek?"

Because it's totally called Seek... For the time being... until I change it, again.

My last post had some rough character designs for this developing story I'm doing, you know, for funsies! So today I'm just simply dumping some old development work I've been messing around with over the last four years. This also allows me to continue being lazy and not take time to post anything new! Oh boy!

Character Sketches

Okay, okay, okay, OKAY!  GOD I’M LAZY with this blog but I know I have to post something when Tiny updates her thing more than I do! Short people aside, it’s been a WHILE since I last posted something here so I’m going to give a quick review of what’s been happening to me lately: Getting ready to move to another country, working still in grocery as a stocker, and trying to tie things up before I leave. But that stuff aside, it’s not bad but just crazy at times.

So art! I have some character sketches from one of my other stories that I’ve been developing over the last, I think, four years. Nothing of course is finalized (it never is) but the characters are finally taking the shape I want them to be. Well, minus one of them. The other lead character I can never agree on a look on her so I kind of removed her from this post.

Originally I was working on a very comic like style for this but I recently threw it out because I never felt it matched the characters right. It took me a while to realize that I should use my more cartoony style for this instead.

After watching Hotel Transylvania with friend Joe, I started to be re-energized for my love for Genndy Tartakovsky's work! After rewatching all of Sym-Bionic Titan and a few Samurai Jack episodes I was reminded the simple beauty of cartoons. So I decided to go back to a more cartoon like style for this and BAM! I can honestly say I never felt more comfortable drawing these characters! Are they finalized? Hell no. But it’s now a better start than before.

VOOM, VOOM!

Just to note, I do actually finish sketches before I start working on the final when it comes to a job or an assignment. These sketches are just for me so what I normal do is make a quick sketch to get a feel of the character and then jump onto the computer. Are these final works? Nope. Probably will do more complete drawings and work more on the vector work. Just showing you what I have working on.

Da Help

I'm not going to try and warrant this by calling it a finish piece or even a sketch, but it is an idea. The idea just popped up and I had to put it down on paper. It's simple, it's sketchy, and it's incredibly small! The actual size is just a little bigger than my thumb!

So nothing special, but it's a beginning.

Next Project

What can I say, I like jumping the gun. And because of that I may not be showing any material of what I'm working on that's related to this any time soon... Honestly, I just want to show off the logo... sorry...

Aaaaaaaah, I will continue to work on Project Build-A-Friend but right now I feel there's no need to rush that. Or, well, this either. Just making projects to entertain myself for the time being.

Build-A-Friend: Bubba

Finishing up the female run (for now) is my aunt Bubba! She asked nicely for this so here she is! I feel I should add a dollar bill in her hand to show she is ready to play "Steal Bubba's Money." What a fun little family game. I can't really say she wins considering it is "Steal Bubba's Money" but yeah... as I see it now, maybe it is more appropriate that she has no cash in her hand...

Build-A-Friend: Laura

Why did this take so long? Woot, so here is Laura in actual scale size! And no, she's not twelve but hell she could be from looks alone. And attitude. And the lollipop. Maybe she is twelve...

Build-A-Friend: Geneva

So who is it today?! Geneva. If you read the title you would already know that. It's Geneva. GAWD!

It was starting to get clustered with men here so I finally decided to move over to that other gender.

Giiiirrrrls.

So here's Geneva. So why does she have a battle ax? Well, why do you ask stupid questions?

Build-A-Friend: Justin

Have you ever done something that felt so innocent yet feel that it will send you straight to Hell for doing it? Hmm? Ugh, whatever, here’s my Asian friend Justin as a yellow Minifigure…

Here's Justin with his Flyers Shirt on while taking his normal dose of 5-hour Energy (how the Hell is he still alive?)

I do not own the Flyers Logo or 5 Hour Energy Logo. Don't sue. Please.

Build-A-Friend: Joe

And here’s the amazing Joe-Joe firmly grasping his legendary GROUNDHOG-STICK! (LEGO, if there’s any chance that you are reading this please don’t ask me what a Groundhog-stick is. I really don’t want to explain it. And it's for the best too.)

So there might be a chance you recognize this mug-of-a-face on this Minifigure, and if you do it’s because I posted Joe’s face back a while ago on this blog. Well, now he has a body! And heaven help us with what he’s planning on doing with it.

(designed by me, and just read the last post for the same details here)

Build-A-Friend: Mike

Have you ever wanted to be personally Facebook-stalked by Austin Carlson? No? Well, TOO BAD! I have now started a new project called BUILD-A-FRIEND where I try to squeeze and squish my friends down into little cute LEGO Minifigures! Adorable, yes? No? TOO BAD!

But seriously, if you feel uncomfortable in any way about possibly being minifigurized just contact me and tell me. I will call you a wimp though but will still respect your decision not to be made cute. Mike, on the other hand, has no choice in this matter.

The Mike Minifigure comes with a Pepsi can, hat, and not-yellow-skin. Had to be different didn't you Mike.

Legally speaking, I do not own the rights for Pepsi or their logo or the LEGO pieces you see above. So please don't sue. The designs, however, are mine.

I will continue doing sketches but for now I want to focus a little more on this for the time being.

So... who's next?

(special thanks to LEGO Digital Designer and POV-Ray Converter for the 3D renders)

Defender of Mother Nature

Here's our little wooden cape crusader of the woods! I didn't intend for him to be a Makar look-a-like but it's hard not to when I want to draw a short tree man.

By-the-way, he can't fly but he's sturdy.

The lyrics are from Coldplay's Til Kingdom Come

This will probably be the last post for a good while as I need to start to get ready for my job interview in Denmark.

Happy 4th!

Remember kids, let your parents handle the fireworks. After all, you need those fingers for video games and texting.

Center of the Universe

Sorry for the long delay. I quickly got sucked into making a new portfolio for a possible job and then I went to a party right afterwards. So yeah, kind of neglected this blog for a while...

Oopsies!

Still love ya folks but right now I'm busy getting a new portfolio ready for a possible job. Post later! Bye-bye and kisses!

A Man's Beard

I sure couldn't figure out what to draw today so I drew Gimli. So yeah.

And check out my friends' tumblrs while you're here:

Evolution of a Character

Dear lord he has a long neck... Okay, this is Mike a character I created back in high school and over that time Mike's appearance has changed a little here and there. But that's not what I'm going to get into. Instead of talking about who he is I'm going to talk about the evolution of how I use this character.

You see, Mike was created out of the idea of doing a newspaper style comic strip. He has also been the subject of a story that I had to write in my English course in college (which I hope to find the papers so I can burn them someday) and recently I used him to help self-promote myself as a possible children book illustrator. So nifty, Mike reappears a lot so why does that matter? A lot, actually.

Mike develops over time not out of characterization or plot development but through situations where I need something explained. It could be a story that needs a character or a mailer piece that needs a small kid. So Mike changes for the situations I need him for.

So Mike changes like a piece of silly-putty. The silly-putty can change shape but it is still composed of the same material as it first started as. You have a kid dressed as a knight carrying a lance that is also a fishing pole and he's also named Mike. His appearance may change but he's the same thing.

So why am I going over this? Well, Mike popped up again. I want to do a project for this blog and it seems Mike and his steady steed the pig are going to be used for it. The project demands certain details so once again Mike is changing to meet that challenge. I really do not know where this may go but it feels right to let Mike ride again.

Mike & Steady Steed
Hopefully coming soon.
